Mansion houses

The village of Zurbano has several spectacular mansions dating from the 17th and 18th centuries which belonged to the families of the local nobility, such as the Basterra, Otálora, Isunza and Iriarte families:

  • The country house of the Zurbano family: declared a monument, this 17th century building has a central façade flanked by two square turrets.
  • Otarola-Guevara mansion: similar in some points to the above. Crowned by a fine Baroque coat of arms proclaiming the lineage of its inhabitants.
  • Ortiz de Zárate mansion: A great Baroque coat of arms stands out beneath broad eaves with double decorated corbels. The house dates from the 16th century.
  • Otazu mansion: built on the site of the former Basterra tower keep. A fine example of grand country house architecture: a large building bearing the Baroque style coat of arms of the Guevara family.

The village also has several other grand houses dated between the 16th and 18th centuries which bear the coats of arms of noble families. There are also typical rural farmhouses which are more similar in style to those of the plains than to those found in the surrounding area.
