Legutiano is one of the many villages founded in the province of Araba in the 13th and 14th centuries to reaffirm the power of the crown over that of the local nobility. Legutiano acquired its charter in 1333 from King Alfonso XI.
The Medieval origins of the village can be seen in its architecture. A gate with a double lancet arch at the entrance to the village marks the location of the original defensive walls.
Around the village many fine examples can also be seen of the Basque farm-house architecture of the Atlantic coast area. The surrounding villages also have many fine farm-houses in matchless natural settings overlooking the waters of the reservoir.
