Romanesque architecture

In the context of the district of Zuia, the Romanesque architecture of Urkabustaiz is rivalled only by that of Zigoitia. It is distinctive enough for the area, along with Koartango and Zuia to be considered as having a style of its own.

The church of San Pedro in Beluntza contains some of the most spectacular features, including a rich iconography of animal, plant and geometrical motifs around the windows at the sanctuary end, the cornice and the portico.

The building dates from the 13th century, as do the churches of Santiago in Goiuri-Ondona, San Miguel in Uzkiano, San Fausto in Unzá and San Juan in Oiardo. They all feature this same type of decoration around their windows and doors. Overall, a tour of the municipality offers lovers of Romanesque art a truly interesting experience.
